Hose Nozzle vs Pressure Washer: Which Do You Actually Need?
By Laura Pemberton · Updated on 7 October 2026
Short answer: a high-pressure hose nozzle is enough for most everyday outdoor cleaning: patio slabs with surface grime, garden furniture, bikes, bins and the car. It uses the pressure from your outside tap, needs no electricity and takes no time to set up. An electric pressure washer is still the better tool for deep oil stains, thick ingrained dirt and big jobs. If your mains water pressure is low, a nozzle will feel weaker.
How does a hose nozzle get more pressure from the same tap?
It narrows the flow. The same amount of water forced through a smaller opening comes out faster, which gives you a focused jet instead of a gentle spray. That also means the result depends on what comes out of your tap: the stronger your incoming water pressure, the stronger the jet. A nozzle does not add pressure the way a motorised pressure washer does, and we won't pretend otherwise: our GT9 High-Pressure Cleaner is not a 110-bar machine.
Hose nozzle vs pressure washer: how do they compare?
| High-pressure hose nozzle | Electric pressure washer | |
|---|---|---|
| Power source | Your mains water pressure | Electric motor and pump |
| Set-up | Attach it to the hose and turn on the tap | Find a socket, connect the water supply, unwind the hose and cable |
| Electricity needed | No | Yes |
| Storage | Fits in a drawer or the shed | Needs floor space |
| Maintenance | Rinse it | Flush the pump, dry it out, coil the cables |
| Surface grime on slabs, furniture, cars, bikes | Good | Very good |
| Deep oil stains, thick ingrained dirt | Not designed for it | Better |
| Risk to soft wood and paving joints | Lower, you can turn the jet down to a spray | Higher, a high-bar jet can lift grout and damage timber |
| Low mains pressure at home | Noticeably weaker | Not affected |
When does a pressure washer still make sense?
Electric pressure washers still have their place. If you are cleaning a large driveway in one go, removing years of black spots from a patio or tackling oil on concrete, the extra power saves time. Many people own one and rarely use it, though, because of the effort involved. A MoneySavingExpert forum member explained it plainly: "I do have a Karcher pressure washer, but have no idea how to use it… I'm not sure that I can even hump it up the cellar steps on my own."
For the jobs in between, the ones you would do every few weeks if it were quicker, a hose nozzle is the practical choice.
Can a pressure washer damage your patio or decking?
It can, and it is a common worry among UK homeowners on the forums. A user on the same forum warned: "Don't use pressure washers on wooden decking or furniture though. It opens up the grain of the wood and accelerates the rate of decay." A Mumsnet member's advice on patios was to "avoid the grouting". A strong jet held too close can blast the sand or mortar out of the joints between slabs.
With a hose nozzle, you can switch between nozzles and step down from a strong jet to a gentler spray for softer surfaces. Whatever you use, test a small hidden area first and keep the jet moving.
How do you clean a patio with a hose nozzle?
- Sweep first. Clear leaves, soil and loose debris so you are not just moving mud around.
- Check your joints. Pull out any weeds growing between the slabs. Our guide on how to pull weeds without kneeling covers this.
- Soak the surface. Wet the area with a gentle spray so the dirt starts to loosen.
- Work in strips. Use the focused jet at a shallow angle, working from one side to the other so the dirty water runs off the cleaned area.
- Go gentle near the joints. Switch to a softer spray along the grout lines and on any timber.
- Rinse. Finish with a wide spray to wash the loosened dirt away.
What comes with the GT9?
The GT9 fits standard UK garden hoses and comes with:
- 3 interchangeable cleaning nozzles, to go from a strong jet to a gentle spray
- A universal adapter for Hozelock-style quick-connect fittings
It needs no electricity and is covered by our Lifetime Warranty with free replacement. If it isn't right for your garden, you have 90 days to return it.
What are the limits of a hose nozzle?
- It depends on your water pressure. On very low mains pressure, it won't match a powered washer.
- It is not for deep oil stains or thick layers of grime. Those need a pressure washer or a specialist cleaner.
- It uses your hose. If your water company has a hosepipe ban in place, check what it allows before cleaning.
FAQ
Will it fit my hose?
It fits standard UK garden hoses, and the universal adapter covers Hozelock-style quick-connect fittings. If you have an unusual connector, check the GT9 page or message our UK-based support team before ordering.
Is it as powerful as a pressure washer?
No. It turns an ordinary hose into a focused jet, which is enough for everyday cleaning, but it is not a motorised high-pressure machine.
Can I use it to clean the car?
Yes. Use the gentler spray for the paintwork and the stronger jet for wheels and arches.
What other hose nozzles are there?
We explain the different types, and what each one is good for, in our guide to high-pressure hose nozzles.
