How to Make a Cordless Vacuum Battery Last Longer
By Laura Pemberton · Updated on 9 October 2026
Short answer: many "battery problems" on a cordless vacuum are really airflow problems. Empty the bin, wash and dry the filter, and clear any blockage, and you often get back runtime you thought the battery had lost. To make the battery itself last for years, keep it away from heat and freezing cold, let it cool before you charge it, use a proper charger and don't leave it charging unattended.
Do you want a longer runtime, or a longer battery life?
They are two different things, and they have different fixes.
| What you notice | Usually caused by | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| It runs for less time than it used to | A full bin, a clogged filter or a blocked nozzle making the motor work harder | Empty the bin, wash and dry the filter, check the nozzle |
| Suction feels weaker | The same airflow problems | As above, then test again before blaming the battery |
| It won't charge | The cable or the plug | Try another USB-C cable and plug, and charge it indoors |
| Runtime has dropped slowly over the years | Normal ageing of a lithium-ion battery | Contact our support team |
How do you get more runtime from each charge?
- Empty the bin every time. A full bin restricts airflow, and the motor works harder for less suction.
- Wash the filter, and let it dry completely. A dusty filter is a common cause of lost suction. With the GT40 Pro you get three washable HEPA filters in the box (one fitted, two spare), so you can use one while another dries.
- Check for blockages. Hair or a sweet wrapper stuck in a nozzle has the same effect as a full bin.
- Use the right attachment. A brush head on fabric and a narrow nozzle in gaps clean faster than one nozzle for everything, so you finish sooner.
- Use the strongest setting only when you need it. On machines with several power modes, the top setting drains the battery fastest. SharkNinja's advice for its own vacuums is: "Only use BOOST mode for a quick extra burst of power." The GT40 Pro works with a single button, so day to day its runtime comes down to airflow and charging.
- Start with a full charge before a big job, such as a whole car or the stairs.
How do you make the battery last for years?
Lithium-ion batteries, the type in most cordless vacuums, age faster in some conditions than others.
- Avoid heat. Dyson, for example, recommends storing its cordless vacuums between 18°C and 28°C, away from direct sunlight, and warns that "Hot environments speed up battery aging." Don't leave a vacuum on a sunny windowsill, next to a radiator or on the dashboard of a parked car in summer.
- Avoid freezing cold too. Dyson notes "The same goes for cold porches and garages in winter." Dyson's machines won't charge below 3°C. Whatever brand you own, it's sensible to charge a battery indoors on frosty days rather than in a freezing garage or car.
- Let it cool before charging. After a long clean, give it a few minutes before you plug it in.
- Don't leave it flat for weeks. If you won't use it for a while, charge it before you put it away and top it up now and then.
How should you charge a cordless vacuum safely?
Electrical Safety First's advice for phones and tablets is a sensible rule for any rechargeable device:
- "Only use a compatible USB charger from a reputable source"
- "It's recommended not to leave devices charging while sleeping or unattended"
- "Don't cover the phone, tablet, or charger while it is plugged in."
- "Once the battery is full unplug the charger."
The GT40 Pro charges by USB-C, like most phones, so use a decent USB-C cable and plug rather than the cheapest one you can find.
What runtime should you expect from the GT40 Pro?
The GT40 Pro uses our Lithium PRO GEAR battery, which gives up to 3 hours of continuous use, and it charges by USB-C. The tips above still matter more than the number: a clean filter and an empty bin make the real difference day to day.
One question our UK-based support team answers again and again: "I paid for the battery upgrade, where is it?" If you added the higher-capacity battery when you ordered, it is already installed inside the device. There is nothing extra to fit.
And the GT40 Pro is covered by our Lifetime Warranty: if it ever fails, we replace it, and a real person answers 7 days a week.
Spare filters are in the GT40 Pro accessories, including a kit of 4 washable HEPA filters. You can find the GT40 Pro for the home on the GT40 Pro Homes page.
FAQ
How do I get the most from the GT40 Pro's battery?
It works with a single button, so there is nothing to set. Keeping the bin empty and the filter clean is what keeps the runtime up.
Should I leave my cordless vacuum on charge all the time?
Electrical Safety First advises unplugging devices once they are full, and not charging them while you sleep or are out.
Why has my vacuum's runtime suddenly dropped?
Airflow is usually worth checking first: a full bin, a wet or dusty filter, or a blockage. A battery tends to age slowly, over years.
Can I keep the GT40 Pro in the car?
Yes, it is made to be kept in the car and charged by USB-C. Keep it out of direct sun in summer and charge it indoors on frosty days. Our GT40 Pro review covers how it works in the car.
